Respond by August 15
Every year the Association asks its members to consider serving on the Board here locally, at the state level, and/or the national level. It is that time again. If you are interested in serving, please submit a letter of interest to the Nominating Committee via GHBA by faxing to 281.970.8971, mailing to 9511 W. Sam Houston Parkway N, Houston 77064, or emailing to lrimer@ghba.org. Express your interest in the local, state, and/or national director’s position and indicate if you are a builder, developer, remodelor, or associate member. The number of positions available each year is limited and many qualified candidates apply, so please get your complete information in now. But read the following information first! Leadership brings responsibilities. (Attending meetings is at your own expense.)
GHBA
The board members at GHBA are elected for two- or three-year terms (with the exception of council and division presidents who serve only during their term as president). The terms follow the calendar year. Each director shall:
- Attend the ten monthly Board meetings (minimum seven);
- Attend all GHBA general functions, including the three general luncheons and Extravaganza;
- Invest in GHBA’s HOME-PAC (minimum $250);
- Take an active role in the committee structure of GHBA;
- Be active in recruiting new members; and
- Support special events such as the New Home and Remodeling Show, PRISM, and Extravaganza.
- Sign Leadership Commitment and Conflict of Interest Statements.
If you are interested in serving and are willing to participate and take on the leadership responsibilities, please send in your letter of interest right away (may be emailed).
Secretary
Per the bylaws, the GHBA officers are elected through the “ladder” method. A new secretary is elected each year and that person commits to four years of service, as secretary, vice-president, and president, then serving one year as past president before leaving the board for a minimum of one year. As vice-president and president, the person will also serve as a TAB director and usually an NAHB director. GHBA reimburses the president and vice-president for travel related to those directorships, but a minimum of six trips each year is required. The secretary must have been a GHBA member for at least three years and on the board for at least one year. If you qualify, are willing to make the commitment, and wish to serve as secretary for 2009, please state those intentions in your letter as well.
Texas Association of Builders
The GHBA directors for TAB are chosen each year. Current directors are not automatically chosen. You must state your interest in remaining as a TAB director if that is your desire. TAB directors must attend a minimum of three of the four Board meetings during the year. The meetings are in Austin and other places around the state. The first one is at the Sunbelt Builders Show in October, as is the final one the following year. The second one is generally in February. The third one is usually in June. You must attend the actual board meeting, generally four hours on Saturday. There may be special called board meetings as well. The by laws state that you shall not miss 50% of the meetings, so for example, if there are a total of six meetings, you must attend four. You are also encouraged to attend the caucus meeting and to participate on committees and task force groups and contribute to the state PAC. Please send in your letter of interest right away (may be emailed).
National Association of Home Builders
The GHBA directors for NAHB are chosen each year. Current directors are not automatically chosen. You must state your interest in remaining as an NAHB director if that is your desire. NAHB directors must attend two of the three Board meetings. The first one is in the spring in Washington, DC. The second one is in the fall at some other destination, and the final one is at the convention and IBS the following year. You are encouraged to attend caucus meetings and other meetings of interest and contribute to BUILDPAC. You must attend the actual board meetings, generally two days, four hours each.
