Doranne Frugoni-Baker

Doranne Frugoni-BakerIn October 2011, Doranne Frugoni-Baker celebrated five years with Materials Marketing in her position as sales and design associate for the Houston showroom. This year marks 50 years for Materials Marketing, which started as a family owned business. They have since become the oldest, largest and only fully- integrated fabricator of natural stone specializing in tile, moldings, mosaics and custom hand-carved architectural elements.

Now with 11 showrooms across the country and worldwide delivery options, Materials Marketing has unlimited capabilities for custom product requirements and full scale projects. The company's recently relocated Houston showroom displays proprietary collections of glass, metal and ceramic mosaics plus stone tiles and moldings while continuing to specialize in hand-carved natural stone elements such as fireplaces, kitchen hoods, columns and exterior door/window surrounds. That along with 10 different finishes available in more than 25 different stones and multiple in-stock and custom size options makes their offering unmatched in the industry.

“The most satisfying part of my job is the design process with each of my clients and the unlimited creative options we offer,” said Doranne. “Whether I’m working with a homeowner, designer, architect, builder or everyone together on a commercial or residential project, I enjoy the collaborative effort at all levels that it takes to make each unique project come to life. And because we are the manufacturer of our stone products, we can really use our imagination in helping design whatever is needed to give each project a little flair or make it a complete show stopper inside and out.”

Materials Marketing joined the GHBA in 1995 and Doranne has recently become an active member attending meetings of the Remodelors Council, Custom Builders Council and Bay Area Builders Association, as well as participating in the 2011 Frank Aranza Adopt-a-Family event. She now volunteers as the 2012 Ambassador Leader for BABA and serves on the GHBA Ambassador/Membership Committee.

Caroline Kostak

Caroline Kostak, GreenHouse IntegrationCaroline started her professional career as an Inventory and Stowage Officer (ISO) for the International Space Station.  After several years of finding and tracking underwear, tools and experiments for the astronauts, she moved on to other Flight Control positions within Mission Control. The job she loved most was as an Assembly and Checkout Officer (ACO), which involved integrating various operations teams to complete the assembly of the Space Station, one of the highest-performing buildings ever built. As a Flight Controller, she learned project management, integration and communication skills that she realized had far-reaching implications beyond space flight. When the president announced that the Space Shuttle program would be ending, Caroline looked outside her NASA-centric world and wondered how she might apply her skills to be of service in the world.

A chronology of events, including a family history in the construction industry, high school desires to be both an architect and environmental scientist, and the destruction of several homes in her neighborhood during Hurricane Ike, led to her falling in love with Building Science and deciding that green building was the place for her. After leaving NASA in 2011, she launched GreenHouse Integration with the mission to help builders understand the great opportunity they have to be part of the environmental solution by building green. Caroline understands that there are real and valid reasons why some builders are hesitant to embrace green building, but would like to work with them help them see the benefits of building green and to find ways that they can reduce their environmental impact without significantly disrupting their current operations.

Caroline is part of Green Built Gulf Coast, with the goal of being a resource that builders can turn to if they have questions about green building. She also attends the Bay Area Builders Association meetings and the Custom Builders Council when time allows.
Caroline is currently a Green Irene Eco-Consultant and has recently started working with The Reuse People to provide deconstruction services in the Houston area.  Eventually she plans for GreenHouse Integration to be a full-service green building firm that will provide education and consulting to those wanting to green their current homes, provide green renovations, build green buildings from scratch, and deconstruct existing homes.

Caroline lives in the Clear Lake area with her two awesome and amazing children, Alex (6) and Emma (4).

“It has been such a great opportunity to meet and work with great GHBA staffers in these various roles. I’m extremely thankful for the friends and relationships GHBA has afforded me,“ Lawrence said. ”This is a great time for the kick off of the GHBA Young Professionals Committee because as market conditions and opportunities begin to improve, it will be crucial to engage the younger professionals who will be the industry leaders in the next market cycle and beyond.”

Dan Bawden, Legal Eagle Contractors Co.

Dan Bawden“You’re not sitting around the house all summer. Get out there and find a job!” Dan’s father ushered him out the door and the rest is history. Dan wandered onto a nearby construction site in Champions and started framing and trimming out houses. Despite being made to throw 1,500 studs from the ground to the second floor subfloor his first day, he fell in love with homebuilding that day. By the summer of his senior year, Dan was remodeling with his own tools. Following an insatiable quest to buy more tools and write off the cost, he continued. Even college and law school at Baylor didn’t stop him. Dan remodeled for his professors, hoping it would boost his grades. It didn’t. But he made enough money to cover his beer, and even some books and tuition. Unlike many of his business owner peers who don’t “wear the tool belt” anymore, Dan still has many tools and uses them on the job (unless his trades charge him more for “helping out”).

Dan joined the association in 1990 and soon became the GHBA Remodelors Council (RMC) president. He thought it was a great honor, but actually, the other three people in the council had already served, and they were tired. He took on the job and went on to become the only remodeling specialist to serve as GHBA president-so far. Fellow remodeler Leslie King, CEO of Greymark Construction will soon be the second remodeler president of GHBA! The Remodelors Council grew quickly and has consistently been one of the top three councils in the nation (with over 300 member companies), winning a disproportionate share of national excellence awards for the last 16 years. Dan has steadily remained active in the RMC and rarely misses a meeting, networking event or charity project.

Dan’s adventures at GHBA include helping to build the current association headquarters the year he was president. In fact, you may not know that he personally set some of the insulated concrete forms that now comprise the walls of the GHBA building. Another highlight was working on the Extreme Makeover Home Edition in East Bernard, courtesy of KC Cox with Weyerhaeuser. Dan and his lovely wife Konne, became experts in screwing down subfloor and other tasks, working alongside other passionate GHBA volunteers.

In his non-work-related adventures, Dan enjoys skydiving with his daughter Katie, scuba diving with his wife and children, snow skiing in cow suits with rubber udders, playing jazz/blues trumpet and singing in musicals at the Hobby Center and the Wortham Center downtown, golf and racquetball. Life is good!

In 2001, Dan started the CAPS (Certified Aging in Place) designation for NAHB. CAPS is still one of the most popular education course offered to date, with its seats filled with new home builders, remodelers, ASID designers and health professionals. That led to writing and publishing opportunities, HGTV appearances, and articles in every national newspaper and national magazine you can think of, from the New York Times to Money Magazine. The three-day CAPS certification course teaches the unique opportunities of building and modifying homes for the over massive “over 55” segment of America’s graying population.

His biggest passion however, is teaching Universal Design and Aging in Place Design & Construction. Dan has taught the CAPS courses at GHBA since their inception, but he also teaches elsewhere around the country. He is regularly tapped to be the CAPS instructor at the International Builders Show every year. A popular instructor with his students, he was just informed that he’ll be recognized at the 2012 International Builders Show in Orlando, as the NAHB “Educator of the Year.” It will become official on February 7, 2012.

Dan still considers himself a raving fan of GHBA and says, “I will always treasure all the wonderful friends and strong relationships I’ve built with both members and staff over the last 22 years. GHBA is family to me.” To learn more about Dan visit www.legaleaglecontractors.comEmail Dan!
