2017 GHBA scholarship winners and donors

Each year, the GHBA Associate Council awards scholarships to students whose parents are members of the association. These scholarships are made possible through the generous donations of our members. Thank you to all our donors who make these awards possible!

This year, five deserving winners were presented with scholarship checks in the amount of $3,000 each. An official ceremony was held at the November 2017 GHBA board meeting.

The Associate Council would like to extend a special thank you to our outstanding donors. Contributors who donate $3,000 or more to the GHBA Scholarship Fund are recognized by having a scholarship awarded in their name. This year, three companies stepped up as presenting donors: Heritage Construction, The Chesmar Foundation, and the Bill Ulrich Foundation provided by Newmark Homes.

Candy Cleland

ghba scholarship winner 2017Candy is the daughter of James and Jerri Cleland. James is the service coordinator at Perfection Wholesale.
Candy graduated Cum Laude from Tomball High School this past May. While at Tomball High School, Candy lettered in choir, cross country and tennis. She was class president her freshman and sophomore years and a member of the National Honor Society her junior and senior years.

She has dedicated many hours volunteering at various organizations and events like the Special Olympics, Special Education Rodeo Day. Candy is now a freshman at Stephen F. Austin State University in the Elementary Education Department studying to be a Special Education Teacher.

Laura Hinson

ghba scholarship winner 2017Laura is the daughter of Eli and Cindy Hinson. Cindy Hinson is the director of community affairs for Lennar Homes/Village Builders.

Laura recently graduated from Klein Collins High School, finishing third in her class of 835 students. Laura was a Girl Scout from first grade through high school. She was in the National Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society, and the Spanish National Honor Society. She has dedicated many hours volunteering with agencies like the Boys and Girls Country and the H.O.P.E. Haven. In high school she participated in Drama Theater, voice and piano lessons and the Philosophy Club.

She is now attending Johns Hopkins University where she was admitted into the Whiting School of Engineering Biomedical Engineering Program.

Katerina Mayfield

ghba scholarship winner 2017Katerina Mayfield was selected as the recipient of the Heritage Construction Scholarship donated by Jeff Hunt, president/owner of Heritage Construction. Katerina is the daughter of Karen Mayfield, who works in the sales office at ACME Brick.

Katerina is senior at Texas A&M University majoring in International Studies with a focus in Politics and Diplomacy.

She currently holds the rank of Cadet Captain and serves as the commander of Second Platoon in the Corps of Cadets. She is a member of the Alpha Zeta Chi Sorority and through them has volunteered in many service events. She enjoys photography, studying abroad, and has maintained a GPA over 3.5.

Mairon Nolasco

ghba scholarship winner 2017Don Klein, CEO of Chesmar Homes, selected Mairon Nolasco as The Chesmar Foundation Scholarship recipient.

Mairon recently graduated second in his class from Jones Futures Academy, (a NAHB/GHBA Student Chapter), where he was senior class president and a member of the National Honor Society. Mairon won the Texas UIL District Championship in Mathematics and placed third in Number Sense, leading the Jones Academic Team to an overall sweepstakes. He participates in many fundraising activities, class competitions and sports activities.

Olivia Garza

ghba scholarship winner 2017Olivia Garza is the 2017 recipient of the “Bill Ulrich Scholarship” which was provided by the generous donations from the employees of Newmark Homes, in his memory. Olivia is the daughter of Jaime and Terri Garza. Jaime Garza works at DataSmart Home Technologies.

Olivia recently graduated from Cypress Woods High School. Olivia was on the honor roll all four years of high school and in the National Honor Society her junior and senior year. She was president of both the Cypress Woods Choir Council and the Crimson Cadettes her senior year and she was on the President’s Council and volunteered at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church throughout high school.

She is now attending Texas A&M University / Blinn College TEAM Program where she is starting the Pre-Nursing program.
