Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS)

 
Get the technical, business management and customer service skills essential to competing in the fastest growing segment of the residential remodeling industry—home modifications for the aging-in-place market.

THE CAPS CURRICULUM OFFERS:

CURRICULUM AND REQUIREMENTS:


Required Courses (three)
❏ Marketing and Communication Strategies for Aging and Accessibility (CAPS I)
❏ Design/Build Solutions for Aging and Accessibility (CAPS II)
❏ Business Management for Building Professionals

Holders of the following designations are exempt from the Business Management for Building Professionals requirement:
CGR, GMR, CGA, CGB, CGP, GMB, CGA, CR, CKD, CBD, CMKBD, AIA, ASID, GRI, CCIM.

This list will be reviewed periodically and additional designations may be added. Individuals who have earned a Masters of Business Administration from an accredited University within 10 years of submitting their CAPS graduation application are also exempt. However, it is highly recommended that all individuals seeking the CAPS designation take the Business Management for Building Professionals course which focuses on business principles relevant to residential construction.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:


❏ Complete and return CAPS Graduation application
❏ Submit a signed CAPS Code of Ethics
❏ Business documentation

Candidates seeking to obtain contractor status under the CAPS designation are required to submit the following documentation in support of the graduation application:

  1. Proof of liability insurance
  2. Proof of worker’s compensation coverage
  3. A valid business or contractor’s license (if state required)

Graduation fee: $145 Member; $245 Non-member

 

RENEWAL AND CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:


CONTRACTOR STATUS
To maintain your CAPS designation you are required to complete 12 hours of continuing education (CE) every three years. A minimum of six hours must be from academic coursework and an additional six hours through industry education and/or community service activities. You must submit proof of attendance for each event or activity (copy of registration confirmation, show badge, course or designation certificate, etc.) with your CE form. Note that all continuing education must be completed during the renewal cycle for which it applies.

Annual Renewal fee:
$55 Member; $80 Non-member
 
Academic Coursework (minimum six hours required)
Complete an NAHB Education course (in regular classroom format)
Teach an NAHB Education course
Complete a full-day Professional Designation course such as CKD or CBD
Be an active member in a Builder or Remodeler 20 Club

Industry Education and Activities (minimum six hours required)
Attend a national, regional or state trade show, educational symposium, local building industry educational event, NAHB board meeting, or chair an NAHB national committee.
Community service project (maximum two hours) Such as: Habitat for Humanity projects, Rebuilding Together projects, local charity drives, etc.
NON-CONTRACTOR STATUS
To maintain your CAPS designation you are required to earn a total of 12 hours of continuing education every three years. These hours can be earned by attending or presenting educational programs related to aging-in-place issues. Self-promotional programs will not be accepted for continuing education credit. You must submit proof of attendance for each event or activity (copy of registration confirmation, show badge, course or designation certificate, etc.) with your CE form. Note that all continuing education must be completed during the renewal cycle for which it applies.

Attend trade shows, educational symposiums, or educational events related to aging-in-place.
Attend a NAHB board meeting or chair a NAHB national committee.
