Newmark Homes Breaks Record with Sale of Benefit Home

(November 13, 2011) - With the sale of Newmark Homes’ 2011 Benefit Home, a new record was set for this GHBA fundraiser. When the home sold, the net proceeds were a record $336,250! This breaks the 31-year record for the most net proceeds from a Benefit Home.

Newmark Homes presented The 100 Club with $40,000 and the GHBA received a check for $296,250, with the majority of those funds distributed between Texas Children’s Cancer Center, the Alzheimer’s Association and HomeAid Houston. Newmark constructed its Woodhaven Plan for the Project with donated materials, labor and services by GHBA members.

“This is an incredible number when you consider the volatile economy over the past two years,” said Don Klein, chairman of the Benefit Homes Project. “When you have this many companies and individuals stepping up and giving to build a luxurious home of this caliber and price-range for little or no cost, it just shows the industry’s commitment to give to those less fortunate.”

The Benefit Homes are ‘Homes for Good’ – good for the individuals who benefit from these three important charities and good for the families who purchase them. As with the Newmark home, a Benefit Home is loaded with a broad variety of upgrades and amenities not often found in other homes with similar pricing. Newmark constructed its Benefit Home in the premier community of Towne Lake. Caldwell Companies, the developer, donated the homesite.

“Newmark’s Benefit Home was finished out with $97,000 worth of upgrades at no additional cost to the buyer,” said Don Klein, chairman of the Project. “A homebuyer today would be hard-pressed to find that kind of value anywhere else, especially in such a prime community like Towne Lake. The Project’s vendors were the reason this incredible offer could be possible.” Read more

GHBA Charity Reaches $7 Million

(January 11, 2012) - The recent sale of David Weekley Homes’ Benefit Home in Bridgeland pushed the proceeds raised by this GHBA charity over the $7 million mark.

“Reaching over $7 million in funds raised for local charity in a year of economic challenges is a true reflection of the generous nature of Houston’s homebuilding industry,” said Don Klein, chairman of the Benefit Homes Project and president of Chesmar Homes. “It is also a reflection of a stronger market than is typically reported in the media. The GHBA Benefit Homes Project contributed more than half a million dollars in charitable funds in 2011.”

David Weekley Homes constructed its Bernard Plan for this annual GHBA fundraiser. This 3,245 sq. ft. two-story home offers four bedrooms, 3.5 baths and includes a study, dining room, children’s retreat and a bonus room (download floorplan). The home was finished out with numerous upgrades and amenities throughout.

The majority of the proceeds from the sale of this luxury home will be presented to Texas Children’s Cancer Center, the Alzheimer’s Association and HomeAid Houston.

“Our participation in the Benefit Home Project for 2011 further solidifies David Weekley Homes’ commitment to giving back and fulfilling ‘Our Purpose of Enhancing People’s Lives: Our Community,’” said Rick Moore, David Weekley Homes Houston area president. “We truly believe in making an impact on people’s lives, and this is such a wonderful way for us as a company to do just that.” Read more

Benefit Homes Project History

It was 32 years ago when the Greater Houston Builders Association board of directors envisioned a charitable project that would bring the generosity of GHBA builders, developers and vendors together to give back to Houston.

After careful and thoughtful planning, the GHBA formed the Benefit Homes Project and the mission became: To ensure a brighter future for the community’s less fortunate, through the heart and hands of the homebuilding industry. The goal was to do what GHBA members do best—build quality homes. These homes would then be sold at market value for a profit. The majority of that profit would be donated to charity.

Even the fact Houston has been experiencing some of its toughest years in recent history, the builders, developers and vendors came onboard committed to helping those less fortunate. If you ask them why, they will tell you, “Even in economically challenged times, children still get cancer, adults are still facing Alzheimer’s and hopeless families need help more that ever.” This generosity reflects the commitment that Houston area builders and developers have to the community.

Over the life of this program the GHBA has donated more than $7 million to local charities. Currently the Benefit Homes Project distributes the majority of the proceeds to the Alzheimer’s Association, Texas Children’s Cancer Center and HomeAid Houston—all local Houston charities.

Our Charities

HomeAid Houston: HomeAid Houston, a charitable 501(c) (3) non-profit organization sponsored by the Greater Houston Builders Association, identifies long term, stable homeless care providers who need additional capacity and pairs them with GHBA builders, vendors and suppliers who donate their time, materials and labor to help build transitional homeless shelters.

HomeAid works with agencies who serve those who are homeless in the greater Houston area including, woman in crisis pregnancy, victims of domestic violence and spousal desertion, abused children, mentally challenged, adults living with HIV/AIDS, families and individuals homeless as a result of job loss or catastrophic illness, individuals and families suffering from drug and alcohol abuse and homeless veterans and their families.

In addition, HomeAid Houston serves as a housing developer and liaison between homeless care providers, the community at large, volunteers, residential builders, remodelors and developers and their suppliers and vendors.

Since 2003, HomeAid Houston has added more than $7.4 million in real estate to Houston's homeless community, providing over 400 beds. Plans are underway for construction to begin on the Volunteers of America – project with Camden Builders, a 30,000 square foot facility for homeless women and children suffering from the effects of alcoholism and drug abuse. In addition, Legend Homes/Princeton Classic Homes is the Builder Captain for our fourth Gracewood project, the Bradley/Legend House, providing another shelter at the Elmview campus.

In addition to these major construction projects, HomeAid will complete four HomeAid Care projects (smaller remodeling projects) for homeless care providers in Houston.

The Alzheimer’s Association of Houston and Southeast Texas: The Alzheimer's Association of Houston and Southeast Texas consists of families, caregivers, scientists, health professionals, and concerned citizens who are committed to finding a cure for Alzheimer's Disease and to easing the burden of Alzheimer's Disease and related disorders on patients and their families and loved ones. The Alzheimer’s Association’s goal is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

This Benefit Home charity’s vision is a world without Alzheimer's disease.

Texas Children’s Cancer Center: Texas Children’s Cancer Center and Hematology Service is leading the way in fighting childhood cancer and blood disorders. Our world-renowned hematologists and oncologists are pioneers in many of the standard protocols for treating – and curing – all types of pediatric cancer and blood disorders, from common to extremely rare.

We know that the diagnosis of cancer or a blood disorder is traumatic for the child and family. As a leader in family-centered care, Texas Children's Cancer Center helps by providing personalized comprehensive services that address both the physical and emotional aspects of the disease. The Cancer Center's 100 faculty members and 615 staff are the driving force behind our commitment to curing childhood cancer and blood disorders.

The Alzheimer’s Association and Texas Children’s Cancer Center have been Benefit Homes’ charities for more than 20 years. HomeAid Houston was added as a charity in 2008.
