Q. Is "J" flashing an acceptable substitute for step flashing as required by the code?
A. Yes, in most cases, it is acceptable. Many municipalities such as the City of Houston accept
it as it as a reasonable and effective substitute for the traditional step flashing required by the
code in section R905.2.8.4. This opinion is based upon the Alternative materials section of
the code R104.11, which states that alternative materials and methods may be used if
approved by the Building Official and satisfy the intent of the code. Since the City of Houston
does not accept it as an alternative type of side wall flashing, it is felt that this can apply to
building anywhere, unless specifically prohibited by another municipality. (Read more...)
